"Art is not what you see, but
what you make others see."
—Edgar Degas
From a young age, my fascination with art sparked a journey that led me to the School of Art & Design and The Art Students League. Before I retired I worked as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator, and eventually establishing my own graphic design firm on Madison Avenue in New York City.
I embrace Realism—also known as naturalism—a style that seeks to depict subjects as they are in reality, yet maintains an artistic essence that stops short of mere photographic replication.
My artistic process thrives on painting from life, whether capturing a portrait or crafting a still life. While I occasionally draw inspiration from photographs, my approach involves interpretation rather than replication.
I resonate deeply with the words of John Singer Sargent: “...the artist ought to know nothing whatever about the nature of the object before him... but should concentrate all his powers on a representation of its appearance.” This philosophy drives my work, allowing me to respond intuitively to my subjects.
Employing the indirect method, I build my paintings layer by layer, gradually revealing the final effects. Each layer modifies the ones beneath, creating a rich tapestry of color and depth.
I create “Series,” collections of artworks unified by common themes. Some of my series include:
-
“Icon Portraits”: A tribute to beloved celebrities and artists, where I transform black-and-white photographs into vibrant color squares, guided by a specific color palette.
-
“Rock, Paper, Scissors”: Inspired by the classic hand game, this series explores various combinations of its three elements, rendered in complementary color palettes.
-
“Shadow Box”: A captivating exploration of still lifes housed within shadow boxes, illuminated by a single light source, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow.
While I work in various mediums such as pastel, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pen and ink, etching, and fresco, my heart lies in oil painting. Continually inspired, I delve into the techniques of old masters like Rembrandt and Velasquez, alongside modern virtuosos such as Sargent, Zorn, and Sorolla.
